Chapter Chapter 6 in Managing Science, 2011, pp 121-144 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Science interacts with society, principally through technology. We saw an example of this in the previous case of the discovery of nuclear fission and the building of the atomic bomb. The process in which scientific knowledge is transformed into technical knowledge and in which technical knowledge is designed into products and services has been called innovation. The societal infrastructure which institutionalizes this innovation process has been called a “national innovation system.”
