Abstract: Abstract This chapter begins by giving a brief overview of German historyGerman history from the beginning of the twentieth century until today. We then introduce and discuss the principal data sources that are used in this book, and offer a comparison between the regional levels of self-employment in the years 1907 and 1925 with levels of new business formation today.
