Chapter 12 in Profiles in Operations Research, 2011, pp 201-216 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The pioneers ofOperations Research (OR) came from many different social, economic, and educational backgrounds. Their entry into OR was often due to a chance meeting, an unrelated job opportunity, or the influence of a teacher. The William (Bill) Cooper story is a most amazing case in point. He rose from a most difficult social and economic milieu to become one of the most respected and honored members of the OR profession.
