Chapter Chapter 3 in Handbook of Healthcare System Scheduling, 2012, pp 31-64 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The cost of health care is increasing dramatically every year in the United States. For instance, according to the Towers Perrin healthcare survey, healthcare costs increased an average of 6% in 2008 compared to 2007 (Perrin 2008). Cost of developing new technologies and treatments, rising personnel income, America’s aging population, and a relatively increased demand for health care are some of the reasons for this rapid growth. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimated that by 2018, the cost of health care will be more than 4.3 trillion dollars, which is 20.3% of the total GDP (Foundation 2009).
