Chapter Chapter 1 in Modelling in Mathematical Programming, 2021, pp 1-12 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the concept of model in mathematical programming. The classical components of a mathematical programming model are presented as well as a classification of mathematical programming models. A first example of a simple optimization problem is shown. Finally, we analyze the justification of the use of mathematical programming models, arguing the cases where the use of mathematical models is necessary to solve optimization problems.
