Chapter Chapter 2 in Data Science for Nano Image Analysis, 2021, pp 15-33 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the materials research, material characterization is an important step to probe and measure the structures and properties of materials from experiments. Imaging instruments play a vital role in material characterization because of their unique and irreplaceable ability to reveal the microstructures of a material. Material scientists has exploited various kinds of imaging instruments to understand a material’s microstructures and infer the material’s properties. This chapter summarizes the imaging instruments specialized for material research and explains the mathematical representation of the resulting material images, which will be useful in subsequent analysis.
