Chapter Chapter 1 in Business Optimization Using Mathematical Programming, 2021, pp 1-32 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter guides the reader into the field of mathematical optimization, distinguishes optimization from simulation, and introduces the key objects used in optimization models. It sketches how simple linear programming (LP) problems may be solved graphically. The chapter contains a survey of real-world problems and finally a review of the history of optimization. Those readers who want to use the optimization software attached to this book will find sufficient information in this chapter to do so. Readers less interested in implementation issues or already familiar with the use of commercial software may of course skip those parts.
