Chapter 6 in Managing Learning Enterprises, 2024, pp 91-101 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The sixth chapter of the book Managing Learning Enterprises entitled “Stakeholder Orientation: The Foundation of a Learning Enterprise” from the first part entitled “Characteristics of a Learning Enterprise” deals with the importance of stakeholder analysis for any organization, but especially for learning organizations. Every organization creates new value based on information and knowledge that comes from different sources. Management therefore has the task of identifying relevant interest groups or stakeholders and maintaining relationships with them, as suggested in the following analysis. It is recommended to take a systemic rather than a dyadic approach to the analysis, as stakeholders not only have a direct influence on the organization’s activities, but also interact with each other and can thus indirectly influence the organization. Stakeholder analysis is not only important for the private sector, but also for the public sector, as the latter bears a high degree of public and political responsibility. Following the philosophy of the learning organization, it is suggested that effective stakeholder management is based on the identification of stakeholders’ mental models and subsequent reflection on all sides. Diversity in the composition of the board of directors and management can also contribute to the diversity and quality of stakeholder relationships. However, learning is required at all levels, including at board level, which shows how important it is to create a learning environment at this level. In this way, stakeholder management is not only a key factor for effective organizational learning, but also a path to greater social cohesion and integration. Relationships based on stakeholder analysis enable knowledge transfer in both directions and are a source for further learning, enabling the transition of companies to learning organizations.
