Abstract:
Abstract The objective of this thesis is to analyze and develop decision support systems for retail shelf space management. To provide the context, a comprehensive retail operations planning framework is developed for retail demand and supply chain planning. A review of empirical insights, quantitative decision support systems and commercial software applications indicate the need for more advanced models reflecting category managers’ actual decision problems. The focus of this research is therefore to examine retail shelf space problems and develop decision support systems, that support assortment planning (which products to offer?), shelf space planning (how much space to allocate to products?), inventory planning (how to align restocking requirements?) and price planning (which price to assign to each product?) to maximize the profitability of a retail grocery category.
