Abstract: Abstract Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) is a paradigm shift in digital identity management, empowering individuals with control over their personal data. Blockchain technology, with its decentralized and tamper-proof nature, provides a robust foundation for SSI systems. This paper presents a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) of 94 research articles on blockchain-based SSI, published in eight different academic databases. The SLR analyzes the current state-of-the-art, categorizes research into six major groups, and identifies 18 distinct areas of interest. Additionally, a short bibliometric analysis visualized co-authorship and keyword co-occurrences, highlighting the key contributors and emerging themes. We also mapped the geographical distribution of research contributions, revealing significant academic output from countries such as China, India, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Our findings reveal a growing body of research focused on conceptual solutions, implemented systems, reviews, and technology analysis. Although theoretical advances in SSI are promising, challenges remain in practical implementation. Issues such as identity wallet management, regulatory compliance, and user experience need to be addressed to foster widespread adoption. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive map of the literature, elucidating areas of substantial scholarly attention and those necessitating further exploration.
