Chapter Chapter 26 in Handbook of Circular Bioeconomy, 2026, pp 567-582 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Agribusiness is facing increasing challenges stemming from rising global food demand, climate change, and environmental concerns. Circular economy models offer a practical and innovative approach to address these issues by promoting resource efficiency, reducing waste, and fostering sustainable development. This chapter presents the main findings of an initiative aimed at exploring the potential of circular economy in the Argentine agribusiness context, focusing on the CREA collaborative network. Through surveys and case studies, the research analyzes adoption rates, key drivers, and barriers to the implementation of circular economy practices among this network of producers. A set of 13 indicators were developed to measure the impact of circular economy initiatives, considering environmental, social, and economic dimensions. These indicators were selected for their reliability, flexibility, and relevance to different agricultural systems. Finally, the financial challenges associated with the adoption of the circular economy are addressed, and sustainable financial instruments adapted to local market conditions and the specific needs of circular economy models are proposed. The results provide a structured framework to assess and promote circular economy practices in the Argentine agribusiness sector, supporting a transition toward more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.
