Abstract:
Abstract This chapter approaches the concept of smart government. It justifies the importance of this term; it defines and explores it and tries to distinguish it from the smart city and the smart city government. Moreover, it lists and analyzes the key components of smart government, including data-driven governance and community engagement. Finally, it explains how co-production and co-decision-making can enhance the quality and the transparency of government, especially in the era of smart cities where emerging technologies, data and AI transform dramatically the way that governments work and offer services to their communities. After reading this chapter, the following questions will be answered: What is smart government? What are the core elements of the smart government and how it is differentiated from smart city? What is the role of government and smart government in the era of global urbanization and the Internet of Things? How can the democratic system be enhanced in a highly-interconnected world? Which can some future challenges for governments be named in the urbanization era?
