Abstract:
Abstract At the beginning of 2020, the consumption of the cultural goods and services in Romania, as well as in the European Union countries, was already at a rather surprisingly low level due mainly to the lack of time and lack of interest of the consumers. When the coronavirus outbreak hit, the cultural sector has received another tough punch: with practically all the activities and events suspended, the cultural entities have discovered that, with their audiences in lockdown at home, life has suddenly become even more challenging. The paper assesses and quantifies the impact of the missing audiences over the performances of the main segments of the cultural market in the specific case of Romania, based on the primary data gathered in two consecutive moments – March–May 2020, respectively, March 2021 – at the level of two groups of respondents. The research approach takes into consideration the overall cultural access and participation of the investigated cultural consumers within the particular context created by the restrictive measures imposed by the authorities to limit and control the epidemic, determines and assesses the index of cultural practice, and discusses the perspectives of recovery.
