Abstract:
Abstract This research proposes a framework to include sustainability in consumer protection policies. The proposed framework is based on a theoretical framework that includes four components and a content analysis of the official documents of six African countries’ legislative and policy documents. The interpretive observations of the content of the documents provide guidance as to what the actual policy contents should include. Policies should be clear about sustainability definitions, specify sustainability initiatives at various phases of the product life cycle, include proper policy measures, and have a minimum mandatory policy compliance that will lead to voluntary adaptation of business practices. The study showed the lack of Afrocentric scholarship in public policy and particularly that more research is needed on consumer protection policy as a mechanism that can contribute to sustainability and multilateral global aspirations such as the Sustainable Development Goals.
