Chapter Chapter 1 in Management and Resilience of African Organizations in Times of Crisis, 2024, pp 3-14 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The United Nations promotes global resilience via the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and via the goals of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). While these goals provide an exemplary road map toward achieving sustainability and resilience, missing is a discussion of personal resilience. This paper closes that gap by reviewing theories of personal resilience, locus of control, and how dimensions of national culture impact personal resilience. Using the Hofstede dimensions of culture, countries in Africa are compared uncertainty avoidance, power distance, and individualism, with a discussion of how those dimensions impact resilience. The paper concludes with a discussion of methods individuals and institutions can use to increase personal resilience.
