Chapter Chapter 2 in Reimagining Capitalism in a Post-Globalization World, 2024, pp 19-32 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Globalization is a long-term process through which the living style and standard of the most distant and different regions become uniform. Although it is not a new phenomenon, that of transferring technologies, skills and ideologies, in the current context, globalization has reached such high levels that it sometimes generates an opposite reaction. The manifestations of these reactions have implications in the human socio-psychological profile and in the economic, political, social, and cultural fields. One of the great theoretical disputes of the contemporary world is represented by the contradiction between globalization and sovereignty. The global world matters and has the role of developing society, but unfortunately, it is not the states and national economies that try to compete through public policies, institutions, education, research, and development, infrastructure, etc., but mainly private (multi- and transnational) companies benefit from this trend. Against the energy, health, legitimacy, and trust crises, sovereignty is developing in our multipolar world—a natural right of states to self-determination. Beyond this contradiction, the society of the future has as its main landmark the full manifestation of the human personality. This tendency will also be found in the post-globalization society as a response to fanatical capitalism, which limits individual freedoms. The economics of leisure will prevail in a primary position in the process of developing the human personality in the future society. Our communication addresses the place, content, role, and perspective of a distinct form of tourism in this future context—adventure tourism. This niche of tourism proposes for individuals to get out of their comfort zone and exceed their limits by exposing them to physical and psychological challenges and to cultural diversity. As the standard of living becomes uniform, the need for individuality and authenticity increases; therefore, a remarkable growth of this tourism sector is expected and also a direct correlation with the level of globalization. In order to validate the correlation theory of the two concepts, an algorithm based on artificial intelligence was used, through which a multi-variate forecast was carried out based on advanced machine learning algorithms. These algorithms have the ability to analyze a quantity of predictors too high for a human analysis, and they build neural networks capable of determining the evolution of adventure tourism. At the same time, the algorithm was able to highlight the predictors and their impact on the growth of adventure tourism in Romania, one of them being the globalization index.
