Abstract: Abstract This article explores the migration of American retirees to Vilcabamba, Ecuador, through the lens of Boaventura de Sousa Santos’s concept of localized globalism. It examines how “localized globalization” transforms local conditions to accommodate transnational demands, turning Vilcabamba into a global haven of peace. Utilizing John Urry’s theory of “consumption of places,” the impact of tourism and retiree migration from the Global North on Vilcabamba’s development within the context of unequal globalization is analyzed. Additionally, the migration of older adults is considered an alternative migratory stream, contrasting development/maldevelopment from a Global South perspective. This study employs structural analysis and extensive interviews to understand the implications of these phenomena on the community and development of Vilcabamba.
