Abstract:
Abstract Communication is vital for organisations, and recent developments in technology offer substantial opportunities for this. An example of such a technology is Virtual Reality (VR). However, literature on which aspects affect communication through VR is scarce. This study addresses this gap by contributing to the existing literature on VR, investigating the impact of task complexity in team-based VR. A between-subjects experiment examines how different task complexities affect team communication effectiveness, focusing on team communication quality and performance, and how this relationship is mediated by team dynamics factors (sense of unity and high skill integration) and user experience (UX) factors (immersion and social presence). Task complexity was found not to significantly affect team communication effectiveness in VR. However, team dynamics were found to, independently, affect team communication quality and performance. This highlights the importance of team dynamics in VR-based communicative tasks and their effect on effective team communication.
