Abstract: Abstract The need to combine economic efficiency with the challenges of environmental protection and reduction of the consumption of natural resources was the main impetus for eco-innovation. Recent studies have investigated the need to frame discussions about eco-innovation’s role in the circular economy within the market economy or the capitalist system. The desire of profits and the ongoing accumulation of wealth are the two main drivers of capitalism. In this process of ongoing evolution and in view of a sustainable development, innovation is crucial. In order to understand more deeply what kind of eco-innovation the circular economy entails, so that the effects can become beneficial for the environment but also for the economy, it is necessary to analyze more deeply some principles of the circular economy. The main types of eco-innovation issued for the circular economy, as well as the suitable business models, will be analyzed. The transition to a resilient and carbon-neutral economy is the primary objective of the European Green Deal, and eco-innovation is crucial to reaching this goal in the EU. The key composite indicator inside the EU, known as the eco-innovation index, will be used to study eco-innovation in this paper along with its evolution and trends from 2013 to 2024. The analysis will proceed through a framework of EU targets and policies, highlighting some trends and issues of further development in the eco-innovation context.
