Abstract:
Abstract Frugal innovation is a novel innovation approach in resource-scarce environments that provides simple, affordable and functional solutions for unserved or underserved users. Social entrepreneurship is a new approach for the development and implementation of business ventures with the main objective of addressing a pressing social issue. Taking a micro-level perspective, this conference paper centres attention in analysing whether and how frugal innovation manifests at the local level in a sample of 28 social enterprises in Colombia. It illustrates the implementation of the framework to operationalize the identification of frugal innovation considering the three key components of affordability, performance optimization, and focus on a resource constraint context. The results provide new insights that reinforce and complement the scant existing discourse exploring the particularities of frugal innovation in connection with social entrepreneurship.
