Chapter 26 in Management, Tourism, and Smart Technologies, Vol 2, 2026, pp 317-326 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The main objective of this research is to establish the mediating role of environmental awareness in purchasing intention among 336 university students in the Arequipa region of Peru. The methodology used is a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional approach. Structured equation modelling (CBS-SEM) was used for data processing and analysis, using a covariance-based multivariate model with two predictor variables, Subjective Sustainable Norms and Sustainable Performance Monitoring, one mediating variable, Sustainable Environmental Awareness, and one endogenous variable, Sustainable Purchasing Behavior Intention. It is concluded that the firm and positive relationship between sustainable environmental awareness and sustainable purchasing behaviour intention underscores the importance of environmental education and awareness. Campaigns that increase knowledge about the environmental impacts of personal and collective actions are crucial for motivating behavioural change towards more sustainable practices.
