Abstract:
Abstract This study examines the interaction between internal and external enablers in driving business model innovation among small- and medium-sized companies, with a focus on Romanian firms. Using a structured questionnaire and SPSS-based analysis, the study identifies organizational culture, leadership, and organizational capabilities as significant internal drivers. Only technological advancements have a notable influence among external enablers, while regulatory and market-related factors appear to be less impactful. These findings suggest a context-dependent pattern, where SMEs in emerging economies rely more heavily on internal levels than on institutional or market factors. The results underscore the importance of organizational readiness in translating external opportunities into innovation. The findings offer both theoretical insights and practical implications for SME managers, policymakers, and innovation consultants aiming to enhance competitiveness in emerging economies. The paper advocates an integrated approach to business model innovation that aligns internal capacities with external opportunities and constraints to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
