Chapter Chapter 3 in Business Intelligence, 2021, pp 27-50 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The chapter positions BI among other informing activities and systems, stressing the complex nature of information needs served by BI. The features of complex information needs are presented together with features of other dimensions, like common-special, and repetitive–non-repetitive information needs. BI is described as a cyclical process with feedback, such structure being featured by cognitive processes in general. In an organization, other types of information systems share their information with BI—management information systems, decision support systems, competitive intelligence systems, business analytics, and BI relations with all of the above system types are discussed. The chapter concludes with BI relations to other domains where intelligence activities have deep traditions—political and military intelligence, scientific research.
