Chapter Chapter 16 in Open Digital Innovation, 2026, pp 165-184 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines how generative AI can function as a supportive teammate in open digital innovation contests, augmenting teams’ capabilities before, during, and after contest participation. Adopting a team-centred perspective, it analyses how generative AI contributes to speed, inclusion, communication, creativity, technical assistance, and domain knowledge acquisition under the time and resource constraints typical of hackathons and longer innovation challenges. Through phase-specific analysis and illustrative cases, the chapter shows how generative AI can help teams navigate ambiguity, sustain momentum, and extend the life of contest outcomes beyond the event itself, while also highlighting risks related to trust, bias, and responsible use. Finally, it looks ahead to the emergence of AI agents, outlining how increased autonomy in AI systems may reshape contest design, governance, and human–AI collaboration in future open digital innovation contests.
