A chapter in Handbook of Strategic e-Business Management, 2014, pp 237-254 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The use of e-business applications has reshaped the structure of organizational supply chains. e-business applications have enabled supply chain organisations to collaborate with each other in order to meet performance goals. Although recent studies have identified that e-business applications support and enable supply chain management and improve an organisations’ performance, the interrelationship between the applications and performance is still a relatively underexplored research area. In addition, it has been questioned in recent literature whether or not e-business applications directly improve organisational performance. Researchers are frequently emphasising the importance of complementary factors that are essential for e-business applications to create value within an organisation and its supply chains. This chapter proposes a model of the relationship between e-business applications, organizational factors and performance within the context of supply chain management. Based on a literature review and the theoretical underpinnings from the resource-based view (RBV) and contingency theory we provide a novel perspective that expands our understanding of the necessary conditions and underlying mechanisms for firm resources to create business value within the supply chain environment.
