Abstract:
Abstract We use a computationally efficient logistic Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) technique to analyze patent data for Switzerland, Germany, the United States, and Brazil for the period 1980–2021. We find that patent growth dynamics follows the synergy dynamics of the innovation system within the Triple Helix model of innovations, where the observed non-linear interactions of actors are provided by biased information exchange between heterogeneous actors. The proposed approach reveals the hidden structure of the trend in patent and innovation dynamics and can help policymakers identify potential drivers of patenting and innovation activity and formulate informed policies to stimulate innovation development. The paper also provides a basis for future research in various fields studying complex systems of interacting heterogeneous agents.
