A chapter in The Relational View of Economics, 2022, pp 213-227 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the interest of advancing our understanding of leadership in multi-sector partnerships (MSPs) that address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this chapter brings the relational leadership approach of Uhl-Bien (2006) and Wieland (2017, 2020) in dialogue with the African relational ontology of Ubuntu. The introduction describes the urgent need to analyze leadership in MSPs that achieve the SDGs, given the advantage of collaboration between sectors by sharing resources to maximize effectiveness in SDG-related activities. By showing that relationships (individual, collective, and organizational) are a determining component of MSPs, a case is made for relational leadership as an appropriate lens to consider leadership in MSPs. In light of increasing scholarly attention on the African ontology of Ubuntu in the context of business and leadership studies, the chapter then considers Ubuntu from the perspective of Wieland (2017, 2020) relational leadership and relational leadership from the perspective of Ubuntu, keeping the MSP-context and the global need for collaboration in mind as the context which the dialogue is aimed to address. While the authors point out several promising implications and avenues for further exploration, they close by highlighting the need for empirical studies in Ubuntu research to prevent romanticizing the African ontology and nullifying the contributions it could make.
