Case Studies – Applying the Bid Framework

Ngiste Abebe, Mary Trina Bolton, Maggie Pavelka and Morgan Pierstorff

Chapter Chapter 5 in Bidding for Development, 2014, pp 37-62 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The case studies featured in this chapter analyze two cities that used the Olympic bid process as a means for strategic urban development. Manchester's and Istanbul’s repeat Olympic bid experiences are applied to the structure of the Bid Framework and illustrate how their consecutive bids may have catalyzed transportation development. Each case study is structured to consider the city’s historical and economic context, which is then followed by a comparative analysis of transportation plans in the official bid documents to existing transportation projects. The breakdown illuminates to what degree bid documents reflected preexisting transportation needs or initiatives during the same time frame. The ultimate objective of the case study analysis is to take these findings—the steps and trends that supported positive change—and apply them to future bidders.
