Abstract:
Abstract Sustainable development currently constitutes a purpose for humanity, as proclaimed by the United Nations. The business sector is called upon to find innovative solutions to the environmental and social challenges facing the planet, transcending the mere pursuit of profit. Entrepreneurship, traditionally linked to economic growth through disruptive innovation such as “creative destruction”, has been reconceptualised to also address social and environmental market failures. Social entrepreneurship and environmental entrepreneurship contribute to sustainable development in different dimensions. However, it is sustainable entrepreneurship that holistically and simultaneously integrates the economic, social, and environmental pillars of sustainable development. A clear distinction between these types of entrepreneurships is essential for a more rigorous understanding of the impact of ventures on society. After a conceptual discussion about sustainable development and some forms of entrepreneurship, attention is given to how certain case studies address this theme. At the end, it emphasises the need of education for sustainable entrepreneurship not only for practitioners but also for academia so the full integration of the dimensions of sustainability within the business sector could be reached.
