A chapter in Migration from the Newly Independent States, 2020, pp 169-185 from Springer Abstract: Abstract The chapter presents an overview of the development of migration processes in Ukraine after its independence. Key milestones are outlined, and migration trends and political solutions are shown for each of them. The modern migration situation and the activation of international migration during a protracted economic crisis, which has intensified due to military aggression from Russia, are analyzed in detail. The dominant model of migration behavior of Ukrainians remains circular migration abroad for earnings. At the same time, part of the temporary labor migration is transforming into resettlement. Among the migrants, the share of young people and qualified personnel is growing. The demographic and socioeconomic consequences of migration require an adequate response from the state. An important factor in the improvement of Ukraine’s migration policy was the implementation of the action plan on the liberalization of the visa regime with the EU, as well as the desire to comply with European standards.
