Chapter Chapter 1 in Strategic Interaction Between Islamist Terror Groups, 2020, pp 1-3 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The coordinated terrorist incidents on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11th, 2001, (henceforth 9/11) by al-Qaeda exhibited the vulnerability of powerful nation-states to jihadist groups. The American response to 9/11 was the now called Global War on Terrorism, which began with the invasion in Afghanistan and the overthrow of the Taliban regime and also led to the American doctrine of preemptive military actions and the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
