Chapter Chapter 8 in China's International Projection in the Xi Jinping Era, 2020, pp 79-82 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract While the economic integration of Latin America and China through trade ties began almost two decades ago, the one through Chinese direct investment is a more recent development dating back to the years of the great financial crisis. At first, Chinese direct investments were largely bound up with China’s need for natural resources, but then they became motivated also by access to Latin American consumers’ market. This process is taking place in a region usually considered within US sphere of influence. The Latin American countries welcome China’s “patient capital” approach, but awareness of the risks inherent in this relationship is gaining ground.
