The Lagrangian Averaged Euler (LAE-α) Equations with Free-Slip or Mixed Boundary Conditions

Steve Shkoller

Chapter 5 in Geometry, Mechanics, and Dynamics, 2002, pp 113-165 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract I shall present a simple proof of well-posedness for the Lagrangian averaged Euler (LAE-α) or Euler-α equations with either free-slip or mixed-type boundary conditions, and in the process describe certain features of the Riemannian geometry of new subgroups of the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group, corresponding to free-slip or mixed-type boundary data, thus answering in the affirmative a conjecture of Holm, Marsden, and Ratiu [1998a].
