Abstract:
Abstract In most stochastic problems both the system properties and the input characteristics are random. However, the degree of uncertainty in the input and the system can be very different. For example, it is common in earthquake engineering to assume that the structural system is deterministic because of the very large uncertainty in the seismic ground acceleration. Under this simplifying assumption we can evaluate the seismic performance of structural systems by the methods in Chapter 7. Similarly, developments in Chapters 6 or 8 can be applied to stochastic problems characterized by a negligible uncertainty in both the system and input or the input alone, respectively.
