Chapter Chapter 1 in A Short History of Mathematical Population Dynamics, 2011, pp 1-3 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In 1202, Leonardo of Pisa, also called Fibonacci, published a book which popularized in Europe the Indian decimal number system that had also been adopted by Arab mathematicians. Among the many examples given in the book, one refers to the growth of a population of rabbits. It is one of the oldest examples of a mathematical model for the dynamics of a population.
