A chapter in The Laplace Distribution and Generalizations, 2001, pp 275-275 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Laplace distributions found and continue to find applications in a variety of disciplines that range from image and speech recognition (input distributions) and ocean engineering (distributions of navigation errors) to finance (distributions of log-returns of a commodity). Now they are rapidly becoming distributions of first choice whenever “something” with heavier than Gaussian tails is observed in the data. Consequently, a large number of papers in diverse journals and monographs mention Laplace laws as the “right” distribution, and it is a daunting task to find and report them all.
