Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, we introduce the notion of Coifman wavelet systems.1 These wavelet systems are similar to Daubechies wavelet systems (in rank 2) in that they have a maximal number of vanishing moments, but the vanishing of moments are equally distributed between the scaling function and the wavelet function. For such wavelet systems, one has a very good approximation theory, one of the reasons this variation of wavelets was introduced in the first place.
