A chapter in PAUL HALMOS Celebrating 50 Years of Mathematics, 1991, pp 97-102 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Paul Halmos 75! To me that brings up another figure: I have known him now for 50 years — a pretty good fraction of my life. He was in fact the first mathematician I met when I arrived in this country, in 1941. I had had the great luck of getting out of Germany in 1936, to study in Switzerland, under Heinz Hopf; and by 1941 it was high time to get out (the Fremdenpolizei called me in frequently to ask me why I was still there). Another piece of luck was that some money was found for a year’s stay at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
