A chapter in PAUL HALMOS Celebrating 50 Years of Mathematics, 1991, pp 179-188 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Paul Halmos has shaped much of modern operator theory through his published research, insightful questions, and beautiful expositions. The invariant sub-space problem was not originally due to Halmos (von Neumann showed that compact operators have invariant sub-spaces back in the 1930’s [2]), but he played a vital role in arousing interest in the problem through his lectures and writings, and in suggesting the investigation of special cases that turned out to prove to be very fruitful.
