Chapter Chapter 11 in I Want to be a Mathematician, 1985, pp 200-250 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The 1950’s were the most exciting and glamorous and productive years in the history of Chicago (where “Chicago” means, of course, the mathe matics department of the University). That’s a subjective view, but many share it, and it hasn’t been shot down yet. The research atmosphere of Eckhart Hall, with its first class faculty and, if anything, better than first class student body, and its contrast with the languorous mediocrity of Montevideo were invigorating. I dived into it full of enthusiasm.
