Abstract:
Abstract These notes on Eichler-Shimura theory are intended for a reader who is familiar with elliptic curves and perhaps slightly acquainted with modular forms. The primary sources are [8], [19], and [20]. I am deeply indebted to Jaap Top for taking my place at the conference on very short notice and to Glenn Stevens for making the necessary arrangements with tact and understanding. I am also grateful to both of them for a careful reading of the text and for several comments which improved the final version.
