Abstract:
Abstract A major theme of this conference is the interdisciplinary nature of Smale’s work. I would like to comment on the areas of dynamical systems and numerical analysis. For many years it has been clear that numerical analysis could contribute to the study of dynamical systems. Smale appreciated that it was natural to apply the theory of dynamical systems to the study of certain problems in numerical analysis. Let me illustrate by describing a general problem in each area.
