Chapter 44 in From Topology to Computation: Proceedings of the Smalefest, 1993, pp 493-496 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract I’;m very happy to be here at this 22nd reunion of the class of’68, a reunion under the banner of unity and diversity. Of course, diversity is represented by six sessions on different subjects. And about unity, I think it’s appropriate to say that the unity of these subjects was not only through the personality and the genius of Steve Smale, for there was a fantasy at the time. The balloon of the fantasy, called global analysis, went up in 1956 in Mexico City and came down here in Dwinelle Plaza in 1968. And this balloon of fantasy hoped, in the early sixties, to achieve the reunification of the whole of mathematics. Maybe I’m overstating the case, but we were young and idealistic, hoping to achieve a bifurcation from the divergence of mathematics into different fields of specialty into a convergence. And we attained a feeling of community throughout the mathematical research community.
