Abstract: Abstract I was a student of Smale’s during the heady and wonderful years of the mid-sixties described so well by Jacob Palis. At that time, I thought of dynamical systems as very ambitious and very pure. Along with the ambition and the purity came abstractness: I cannot recall in my four years at Berkeley having seen many actual differential equations.
