Abstract:
Abstract The current generation of bitmapped displays has revolutionized both statistical graphics and user interfaces. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions this technology has not yet been applied to managing the information that can be generated by the analysis of even a small set of data. This talk describes SHAW, a simple window-based system for managing the history of an analysis in the S language (Becker et al., 1988). The core of SHAW is a scrolled window which gives access to every S expression in the analysis. Portions of this history may be selected and edited with the user’s editor of choice. A syntax-directed selection mechanism makes it easy to select expressions and subexpressions for input to S or inclusion in a file. A menu and mouse-based interface gives access to both existing and new auditing queries. The user may ask questions about plots, expressions or S datasets created during the analysis. SHAW currently runs under the X Window System™on a variety of hardware.
