A chapter in Sequences, 1990, pp 244-253 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The present work is a contribution toward the theory of the structure of endomorphisms of free monoids. The background from which this work has arisen is the theory of Lindenmayer systems. Most of the references are to papers that deal with DOL theory but the concept of a bounded language, as used in the theory of contextfree languages, and the concept of a locally testable language, as used in the theory of regular languages, also play fundamental roles. Appropriate background sources are the books by G. Rozenberg & A. Salomaa [RS], by S. Ginsburg [G], and by R. McNaughton & S. Papert [McP].
