Abstract:
Abstract We remarked in §13 that the notions of reachability and controllability serve to enhance our understanding of how the inputs to a state space linear system may be used to influence the state of the system. A particular system state is reachable if it is, in a sense, “strongly coupled” to the input through the state transition mapping. A system has a reachable state space if all the states are coupled to the input in this fashion; taking the “natural mode” viewpoint described in §8, we might say that a system has a reachable state space if and only if each of its natural modes may be “excited” by a suitable choice of input.
