Abstract: Abstract It is said that the idea of using feedback to improve the performance of an electrical signal amplifier first occurred to Harold S. Black one Saturday morning in 1927 while he was riding a ferry across the Hudson River to his office in New York City. There is no question that Black’s fundamental insight, coupled with the concurrent and subsequent pioneering work of Hendrick Bode, Harry Nyquist, and others, changed the course of modern engineering. Perhaps more than any other theoretical development, the concept of using feedback to modify the behavior of input-output processes has served to establish the identity of system theory as a distinguished subfield of engineering modeling.
