Chapter 7 in State Space and Input-Output Linear Systems, 1998, pp 104-113 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Mathematical models for “real-world” processes often appear to be as complicated and cumbersome as the processes themselves. Indeed, an adequate mathematical model must reflect at least a majority of the behavioral subtleties of the modeled process. If a model is to be useful, however, it must be computationally approachable. The abstract Definitions 6.1 and 6.2 provide a coherent, mathematically attractive class of models for a broad range of real-world processes; still, unless they can be connected firmly with “honest” equations involving numbers and time functions, they are nothing but arcane, somewhat creaky pieces of theoretical machinery. It is the goal of the present section to forge such a connection.
