Abstract: Abstract An algebraic number α is a number which is a root of a polynomial equation: with rational coefficients a i , not all 0. Multiplying this equation by a common denominator for all a i , we see that α is also a root of a polynomial equation with integer coefficients, not all 0. In this chapter, we are concerned with a special case of algebraic numbers, namely those which satisfy a quadratic equation (i.e. those which are a root of a polynomial of degree 2).
